Engineering Faculty Appointment Criteria

I am going to share the Higher Education Commission HEC criteria for the appointment of faculty members varying from Lab Engineer to Professor.

Today I will discuss the eligibility conditions for appointment in Engineering, Information Technology, and Computing disciplines since it’s related to my interest as well.

Lecturer

For the post of lecturer in any engineering university, a candidate must have possessed a master degree in relevant engineering field. According to HEC, candidates having First Class bachelor’s degree in engineering with no 3rd division in the academic career is also eligible, but in my personal experience universities will never bother to call you for an interview if you only possessed a bachelor’s degree. But you can apply for lab engineer post if you don’t have a master degree but have a bachelor degree. It’s a good practise to apply for lecturer if you have a master degree. Well for the post of lecturer no experience is required and also no publications is required.

Assistant Professor

HEC offers two criteria for assistant professor post. First is the PhD in the relevant field from HEC recognized University/Institution with no experience and no publication is required. Second is the Master’s degree which is awarded after 18 years of education, in relevant field from HEC recognized University/ Institution but a M.S qualified candidate must have two years of teaching or research experience in a recognized Institution/University/College. A 2-years of professional experience in the relevant field is also acceptable. According to HEC policies by the end of 2015, 100% faculty as assistant professor should hold a PhD degree.

Associate Professor

For associate professor minimum qualification is PhD in the relevant field. A 10-years teaching/research experience or 10-years professional experience in the relevant field in a National or International Organization out of which 2-years must be teaching experience.

Note:

Here is an important policy point that after 30th June, 2015, at least 4-years’ experience at the Post- PhD level in HEC recognized University or a post-graduate Institution or professional experience in the relevant field will be required. Second option is that 5-years of post PhD teaching/ research experience in an HEC recognized University or a post-graduate Institution.

Minimum Number of Publications

For associate professor 10 research publications with at least 4 publications in last 5 years in HEC/PEC recognized journals is required.

Professor

Similar as Associate professor, Ph.D. degree is must. But experience is five years more, that is a 15- years of teaching or research experience in a recognized Institution/College/ University or 15-years professional experience out of which 5-years must be teaching experience.

Note:

After 30th June, 2015, at least 8-years’ experience at the post-Ph.D. level in HEC recognized University is necessary or 10-years post-Ph.D. teaching/research experience in an HEC recognized University or a post-graduate Institution or professional experience in the relevant field in a National or International organization.

Minimum Number of Publications

For the post of professor 15 research publications with at least 5 publications in last five years in HEC/PEC recognized journals is required.
